The Intercountry Adoption Journey is a 10-hour course that fulfills the training requirements of countries that are party to the Hague Adoption Convention and provides a solid foundation for all prospective parents pursuing intercountry adoption. Created by NCFA, the Intercountry Adoption Journey has been the training course of choice for thousands of parents.
Children who experience separation from their birth parents, grow up in institutional communal care, or spend time in foster placements abroad have unique that require prospective adoptive parents to be educated and equipped to help their child transition and thrive in a permanent family home. The Intercountry Adoption Journey will teach you about cognitive and social development, sleep and nutrition, medical needs, cultural and racial considerations, communications barriers, and more! The training is divided into 11 topical chapters, each with a quiz to test your understanding.
We've recruited experienced professionals in adoption and child development and seasoned adoptive parents to contribute to this training through videos and resource materials. By taking the Intercountry Adoption Journey, you'll learn from their expertise and real-life adoption scenarios to help you prepare for your journey ahead.
The Intercountry Adoption Journey course is $90/person. In the case of a two-parent prospective adoptive family, each parent must enroll separately and complete the course individually in order to generate a certificate and demonstrate that each parent participated.
IAJ is $75 for NCFA member professionals. Members can access the discount code through logging in to the member portal.

Q: AS A COUPLE, CAN WE REGISTER WITH THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS?
No. In order to generate a certificate and ensure both partners participated, both must enroll separately and complete the course individually.
Q: ARE TRAININGS AVAILABLE FOR COUNTRIES OTHER THAN CHINA?
At this time, National Council For Adoption only offers an extension module for families adopting from China, because China is the only country that requires all families to complete an official country-specific training course.
The 10-hour Intercountry Adoption Journey program is an excellent resource for families adopting from all countries. Be sure to ask your agency if they have additional recommendations for country-specific educational resources.
Q: HOW ARE CERTIFICATES RECEIVED?
All training participants will receive a digital copy of their certificate. You may print it or download it to share with their agency digitally.
Q: I LOST MY CERTIFICATE. CAN YOU SEND ME A NEW ONE?
National Council For Adoption keeps Intercountry Adoption Journey certificates on file for four years. If you completed the course within the past four years, contact Amy Wolfe at awolfe@adoptioncouncil.org for a new digital copy.
Q: I WORK AT AN AGENCY. CAN I PREVIEW IAJ FOR FREE?

Q: I'M A SOCIAL WORKER. CAN I TAKE THE IAJ TRAINING FOR CEU?
Continuing education units (CEU) are not available at this time.
